Rothenburg

Saturday 4th August Rothenburg

Day started slowly after later night with Brunch at 10.15, more lunch than breakfast, with eggs benedict, smoked salmon, kippers, tried it all needless to say.  Boat docked in Aschaffenburg & we took approx 2 hour bus ride through picture postcard Bavarian countryside to Rothenburg, we had to go the scenic route due to problem on the autoban, but no hardship. FYI berg is hill & burg is castle. Rothenburg is a walled town, halftimbered houses, like something out of medieval times & all original, good use is made of geraniums & window boxes..they abound! It is the home of Kathe Wohlfahrt's Museum / christmas shop, a magical shop full of xmas decorations,  hard not to get lost in. I resisted, but did get a smoking man which are traditional to the Franconia area.

We did a walking tour of the town, but to be honest the local German guides are a bit dry, at least the ones we have had so far. Rothenburg has a town square which was fairly hopping with band playing, what looked like wandering minstrels doing a show & the usual cafes etc, little streets ran crookedly  off the square. On the hour the town hall clock strikes & supposedly 2 men pop out & drink a beer, this relates to an old story where the Mayor saved the town by drinking a large quantity of beer, can't remember the details

Left over dough rolled up fried in a ball, called snowballs but far from it, speciality of the area
