Saturday 14 Mai 2011 High on the hog

Slow am, still getting over Barelona, where we were on the go the whole time. Around 11am headed for Rue Royale, runs off Place de la Concorde to Madeleine Square - very slow progress down Rue Royale, all highend shops represented, Chanel, Cartier, Gucci, Lalique, Baccarat, many others, Maxims of course (dropped in for a refresher......not) Eglise Magdelena in the centre of the square with cafes, shops surrounding. Church up flight of steps, sign on railing advertising Mozart Requiem, M quipped "Is he composing or decomposing" Eglise quite dark inside, mass on for a few of the faithful, most in the church sightseers like us.

Thinking about one of these suits from Gucci for F

Ventured into Fauchon - think DJ's foodcourt on steroids, very tres chic, having some tastings of which we partook with gay abandon, mais oui! Je vais essayer. Purchased some special chai tea & instant coffee (for F) while M engaged one of the spruikers in conversation, when I found them he was telling a story, which he dutifully repeated for me. When God made France, he made it so beautiful that the other countries had their noses out of joint, so he populated it with the French so that the rest of the world would not be jealous. (All in charming french accent)
you can read, same as me, sardines in milk chocolate, in Fauchon

Long walk back to garret for rest, M settled down for siesta & I fiddled with blog.

Today's Metro station Vaneau

Out for a bit of shopping, determined to find the first Monoprix (major supermarket chain) we shopped at on Left Bank, but had to settle for inferior one, got few bits & pieces & joined the throng on left bank near the river for tea. I swear every second ( no, probably percentage is greater than that) shop is a restaurant (those in between are souvenir shops) Settled on one Jardin du Roy & had the menu, soupe aux oignons, confit de canard & tarte aux pommes,E14.90 not bad, not good, vin merde. Saw a young black chap who was drunk making his way down the street, & bumping into tables on the footpath, the waiter saw him off rather sharply, & it made me realise that public drunkenness is not something one sees a lot of here. Now on the other hand, beggars -that's a different story, there are a lot of them! Streets still alive with people on the way home at 10pm,  10 minute walk, although the 3 soldiers armed with machineguns patrolling down the side of Notre Dame put the wind up M.
